Vetinari's Terrier by crewwolf Vetinari's Terrier by crewwolf
This is either a tribute to the greatness that is Mister Vimes from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series or to the fact that the sketches that you see will very likely be reduced to a grey smear in my sketchbook in a week's time due to the unpleasant inclination towards smudgeness that mechanical pencils have in my sketchbook, and this is an early fairwell to them. This is partly based on my vision of Vimes (both human and dog), partly based on Paul Kidby's vision of Vimes (he makes Vimes too skinny in my opinion), and partly based on the shepherd-rottweiler mix dog drawing that you might be able to find somewhere in my gallery. When I originally started drawing Vimes, I had him pinned down as, quite obviously, a german shepherd. But a nagging voice in my head kept telling me Come on. Would Vimes really approve of being...a purebred? So I threw in a rotty which, like Vimes, has a bad reputation and could quite easily be a rather nasty dog unless you train the beast and steer their strength and their teeth to something more useful with some discipline and training. Nearly all of the sketches were from when I was reading The Fifth Elephant. The one on the top left is from The Truth. I could probably list the exact lines each expression refers to in the books. But I don't feel like it xP

So many thoughts bumping into each other. Hope I can express them in any remotely organized fashion. Ok, here goes.

1. OMFG!!!!!
2. I love that one floppy ear, it makes him look so adorable and cuddly.
3. Whose a good boy, then! *gives him a biscuit, gets her hand bitten off prob'ly*
4. I wonder if there's any terrier in his mutty blood.
5. I don't suppose you could draw Lady Sybil, pretty please?

I think I'd cheerfully commit murder to see a pic of your version of Vimes with Young Sam, reading The Book.

(though the mind boggles at what the child would look like, given I keep seeing Sibyl as very cheerful hippo.)

When I first read the title, I thought we'd see Wuffles, the more "traditional" of Vetinaris dogs.

And yes, purebreed doesn't fit Vimes. It's like them fancy clothes with feathers and stuff.

This is most definitely Vimes, as we all know that, as much as he'd like to believe otherwise, he is completely under Vetinari's control...

"partly based on Paul Kidby's vision of Vimes (he makes Vimes too skinny in my opinion),"

Yes. Yes he does.
If you're gonna draw Vimes as an animal, this is the way to do it!!

Very cool :) I enjoy this peice , with the smudging, you could get "Workable Fixatif" supposedly you can still
Work with it. LIke erasing, fixing, I only use it when completely done. Hope that helps :)

That's what I worry about with fixatives, whether I'll still be able to add or change the picture later. But I'll keep that in mind and perhaps experiment a bit with other different methods as well, including ~fax's hairspray. There's nothing worse that seeing a good sketch gradually smear to an absolute ruin over time T_T

I know I hate to see my work smear, thats why during the school year in High School, I kept a hold of my book, Also now I have a hardcover one, pages are a little tighter but I hear the sketches wont smear, another thing I was told is, work work work on the sketch and then pen it, but I dont like it being super permanent :P Love your artwork so far :) Hoping to work on some more anthro and upload it soon :)

Awesome job! Also, apparently hair spray can fix that problem with your sketches smearing. It should simply seal the graphite in place without damaging the page.
